Glenn Beck didn’t build up to his current level of hatefulness–one of his cruelest acts came early in his career. When a rival radio host–and former buddy–called Beck’s version of "War of the Worlds" stupid, Beck took revenge on the man’s wife, who had just lost their baby:
"A couple days after Kelly’s wife, Terry, had a miscarriage, Beck called her live on the air and says, ‘We hear you had a miscarriage,’ " remembers Brad Miller, a former Y95 DJ and Clear Channel programmer. "When Terry said, ‘Yes,’ Beck proceeded to joke about how Bruce [Kelly] apparently can’t do anything right — about he can’t even have a baby.
Not only was Beck a former buddy of Kelly’s, Terry–the woman he brutally mocked on-air–was his wife’s friend.
To repeat: Glenn Beck was ticked off at a rival radio host and took revenge by calling the man’s wife–ON THE AIR–and ridiculing them because she’d just had a miscarriage. A grieving woman, live on the radio, laughing about them losing a baby. Funny guy, huh? (Unlike the completely shameless FOX, the radio station he was working at did fire him shortly after that. Now, he’d get a raise.)
I’ve always assumed Beck gets more and more outrageous for the reason Rush Limbaugh does–ratings and the money that comes with them. After all, Glenn Beck told a 7-year-old black girl he’d buy her a one-way ticket to Africa a few years ago. Last month, he called President Obama a racist who hates white people. His rhetoric insists we are heading steadily toward a violent uprising, and he works steadily toward that goal, encouraging an ever-increasing level of hatred toward our government. He uses mock humility and tears to collect his followers. Beck is, of course, one of FOX News’ favored sons.
I’m not inured to Beck’s brand of poison, although I’m getting closer than I’d like. Out of all of this, what shocks me that most is Beck still has the same wife.
