Only Meghan McCain’s family knows what war is like. Period.

This is old news, but it is new to me. I don’t feel any less appalled because it happened last September. On the plus side, I am breathing normally, not having an anxiety attack at the horrifying possibility of President McCain.

Meghan McCain was promoting her new book on the Today Show, and managed to insult all military families–except her own (the Palin family got a brief nod). McCain’s insult, in an excellent sound bite, was

“No one knows what war is like other than my family. Period.”

She proceeded that with ‘My father is obviously a famous war hero.” (Actually, Meghan, your father was a survivor, and he is to be commended for that fact. It’s the only thing he succeeded at in his entire military career.)

The article says McCain commented on Governor Palin’s son getting ready to deploy to Iraq on September 11. You’d think the only family who understands war would understand OpSec. That’s Operational Security, Meghan, and it includes never telling the public when a military member is deploying.

Ms. McCain did not say Track was deploying. She said he was going to “redeploy”. The prefix “re-“–for military families of war heroes named John Sydney McCain, III and authors who should have basic knowledge of grammar–means again. Track deployed. It was his first time. McCain also said her brother was redeploying. False. He was deploying. First time.

The “famous war hero” didn’t redeploy, either. Where did she get the idea that all deployments are redeployments? There’s a first time for everything, including war.

As an aside, Meghan McCain is John’s biological daughter. This is a meaningless bit of information; John adopted his first wife’s daughter, as well as the baby girl his wife said he had to). Evidently Meghan views this as important, either consciously or subconsciously; there doesn’t seem to be any other reason for pointing out that she “shares his DNA”.

Can you say Daddy issues?
